SAILOR MOON WANDS CAN GASHAPON SET REVIEW

$
0
0

Finally completed the Bandai Sailor Moon Wands Can Gashapon set so here is my review! I bought them from Ebay in sets of 4 over several months.

They came in opaque pink plastic bags without the cans. These wands are also repackaged in boxes sold individually in the US. I'm pretty sure they are the exact same thing.

I paid about US$26 to $29 per set, including shipping. They originally retail for 500yen each in the machines.

These are miniatures, not life-sized. They are made of lightweight plastic and are inexpensive display toys which require simple assembly and come with a transparent stand each. They contain small parts.

Set 1 includes Sailor Mars & Mercury's Transformation Wands, Sailor Moon's Moon Stick and the Cutie Moon Rod. They were released in Nov 2014.

Closeup of Mars and Mercury. The bottles are just sitting in the holders and will certainly fall out if you decide to do some twirling! They may also slip out when tilted.

The bottles are filled with coloured water and glitter. The caps do not open and are glued shut, the glitter tends to stick to the walls of the bottle. The stars slide over the caps with a C-shaped fastener. These are not tight and will remove easily.

Back view. They don't look as nice as the fronts and are no frills.

The stands are a nice addition for displaying the wands, however they are quite flimsy! Most of the wands tend to fall off the stands when wobbled or held, as they are not tightly secured or heavy enough. This may seem trivial, but I've toppled the wands many times which is very annoying to say the least.

The Moonstick is my fave. However, the lousy stand came loose again and the stick fell onto my floor and badly nicked the crescent's gold. The gold does not hold up well and is very thinly applied. These are just gachapon standards so keep in mind they are like children's toys grade; kitschy, and for fun only!

The faceted globe on the top has an iridescent coat. It looks to be glass. Good thing I didn't crack it!

The goldtone plating on the crescent was not perfect when I received it initially. The surface was scuffed and dull on some areas, and a gold-polishing cloth did not buff it off. It could be from shipping or the packaging process so that is another thing you should expect, unless they were in the boxed form.

Back view.

The nicks on my moonstick... sigh. Keep them in a cabinet and don't ever touch them again and they'll be alright.

For some reason the gold started wearing down at that corner (left side) of the Cutie Moon Rod, revealing white!

I really don't know how that happened, so that's another piece ruined!! You can't see the flaws before unpacking as they are in opaque bags. Maybe you will have better luck!

Set 2 includes Sailor Jupiter and Venus' Transformation Wands, Sailor Moon's Heart Moon Rod and Moon Kaleidoscope. They were released in Feb 2015.

Venus and Jupiter's wands are similarly made to Mars and Mercury's except the bottles are filled with coloured sand.

Again, the caps are glued shut. I noticed the goldtone on the symbols tend to scuff and are a bit patchy.

These are cute.

Back view.

Heart Moon Rod (Spiral Heart Moon Rod).

A size comparison.

The translucent pink wings can be moved a little bit manually. The 'buttons' don't actually press.

The kaleidoscope effect part is made of prism stickers sealed behind the plastic.

Set 3 includes Sailor Neptune, Uranus and Pluto's Lip Rods and Sailor Chibimoon's Pink Moon Stick. They were released in April 2015.

I prefer they include Saturn! Apologies to Chibiusa's fans but yeah give me Saturn anytime.

Obviously this set would appear more coordinated if it was all the outer senshis, but I guess Chibiusa is more popular than Saturn? Or Saturn's lip rod is just too obscure it doesn't deserve a release?
So will there be a Saturn wand after all, since the set is incomplete?

Back view.

I like the planets they are nice, fat and shiny. Sorry I separated Neptune and Uranus lol. Pluto's wand is the silver one. Some fan-made cosplay Pluto wands are painted purple or gray, possibly due to the anime.

This set has no major problems except for this FINGERPRINT on the glaze! Someone at the factory didn't wear gloves hmm?

The lipstick is made entirely of plastic. It retracts, but is a bit stiff and wobbly.

Chibimoon's Pink Moon Stick is okay, but pales in comparison to Sailor Moon's.

Very tempted to get the compacts now! I do not have space for the entire wands set so I only put the Sailor Moon ones up.

In conclusion, the pros are: they are affordable and cute, and for someone who wants a wand set in a good display size. The cons are: the quality is lacking, and a serious collector may not like the cheap plastic material and accents.

Here are the latest Winter & Christmas digi stamps just released in my shop! I tried to design them as interchangeable as possible.

Building Snowman
Drew this on a whim, reminds of Calvin & Hobbes! Maybe she is Susie with longer hair lol. The artwork is 5" height as she is on her knees but large enough for a card project.

5.7 inches height.
I drew this as a match to Christmas Carol Angel except this digi is more versatile for other occasions. Did you notice the star in her halo?

6 inches width.
I was thinking what animal I could use for Christmas other than polar bears and penguins... Tortoises deserve Christmas so there it is!

6.9 inches height.
Quintessential penguin. This digi can be used for both winter and Christmas projects.

7.5 inches height.
Penguins are one of my favourite birds so I drew another.

9 inches height.
She is part ice queen, part Glinda from the Wizard of Oz, and part Christmas tree topper.

This one is a pack including a bonus version without the snowflake background in case you'd like to customise the scenery. 7.5 inches (original) & 7 inches (no background version).

Happy New Year and wishing everyone a great 2017 to come! Thank you for all your support, I hope you will continue to enjoy Lemon Shortbread digis!

Here are 2 stamp designs for Spring & Summer, with more coming soon.

She is called Gladys, and inspired by those hardcover Girl Annuals I had as a kid. Also I love 50s & 60s fashion! "Gladys' Flowers" is available in my Etsy shop.

"Watering Fairy" is something whimsical and cute. You may recognise the elephant watering can from Daiso!

Lastly I'd like to re-share an earlier pic "Kimono Girl", I finally coloured her, the scenario was originally sakura-viewing during spring time, so maybe this can be an idea for a spring project?

Time flies and Chinese New Year has just passed! Managed to squeeze out 4 images for the past month, I have not been blogging because I was busy with my vintage shop... mod and 1970s kitchenware to be precise lol. Talking about mod, check out the first image:

"Flower Power" is a homage to my favourite era (in terms of fashion!). I made her in shoujo style just because I thought it would be real pretty. 9 inches height.

"Mushroom Land" was in my sketchbook for some time. I once made an aceo of an elf holding a mushroom lamp and thought to do something similar. 7.5 inches height.

"Rainbow Unicorn". I had the 80s in my mind! It ended up looking like My Little Pony x Carebears x Little Twin Stars!! 10 inches wide.

"Kisses" is a sweet new release for Valentines or romantic projects! 6.8inches height.

Blessed Christmas and wishing everyone Happy Holidays!

Where have I been? Well not on blogsphere but will update with a new post soon since I just came back from California and have some pics. I was too lazy to update with new content because all my posts are promoting my digi stamp artwork and isn't that just a bore. Who still blogs anyhow? But honestly that was all I was doing for all those months... WORK!

See you all in 2018!

MEET BONESY KITTY

$

0
Newest member of the cat clan!

He was named Bonesy because he was so thin after being rescued from under the house of my boyfriend's. He was probably stuck for about 2 days and would've starved to death if it wasn't for his incessant mewing below the boards.

Thankfully he was real friendly (grateful maybe!) with his new human family, not feral at all and about 7-8 weeks old I think. Within two weeks the kitten caught two rats in consecutive days. I asked bf, "Are you SURE it's a male? Because male cats aren't as efficient in hunting as females.". He looked again and said "Yeah I see balls.".

Anyhow we brought Bonesy to the vet to get fixed when I went to California last Oct, and guess what? HE turned out to be a SHE! The markings on her ass does make her like she has balls but yeah you can immediately tell she's 100% female when she does her belly flop! We call her Bonnie now.

Active one, we like to think of her as an ocelot. She loves to snuggle and suckle on people's neck and has a penchant for grooming hands. She also likes to jump all over the place, knocked 2 vases into pieces, and perch on bf's back. She and Miu play chase every wee hours of the morning and mid-morning when I was there.

Here she learns the joys of Cat TV from Miu. Miu was initially terrified of this tiny kitten lol.

Kiwi was not fond of her at first, and tolerates the rambunctious kitty at best. She often bops Bonesy's head & hisses when Bonesy gets too wild because grandma doesn't want to play!

Kiwi is still fat lol.

Obese Miu lost a little bit of weight after Bonesy made her gallop around like a mad cat.

Grandma Lucy says hi! She's afraid of something in this photo (think it was the sound of the air pump) and hiding behind our legs. The other chihuahua Dotty recently had a health scare and almost died, she has a blood platelet disease and medication seems to be helping. I hope she recovers fully. Unfortunately I do not have a nice photo of Dotty when I was there because I didn't think she was ill.

Bonesy's first Christmas and Christmas decor. Uh oh, look at her face.

Finally all three cats can co-exist peacefully and watch Cat TV together. Bonesy's in Kiwi's spot though. Actually there's a new stray cat on the porch (wondering if she is related to Bonesy)... don't know what to do yet.

All grown up. Hopefully she remains this size and not put on too much weight!

There I did it! First post of 2018 and something that is not my artwork. My last personal post was in Aug 2016. I have a boring life and there's nothing eventful to post, I just work work work =P

Just a quick post that one of my penguin digi stamp was featured in Papercraft Inspirations magazine #170, November 2017 issue. Grateful for this small feature! I excitedly bought the mag from Barnes & Noble in the US back in December and am a happy camper! I think I may be in the Jan 2018 issue also, can't wait for it!

HEART ROCK FALLS CRESTLINE

$

We decided to head to the Heart Rock Falls (Seely Creek Falls) near Crestline for an easy hike, while I was in California last year. Neither my boyfriend nor I had ever known about it all these years. Have to say it is a lovely little hidden gem. Only knew about the Heart Rock through one of the recommended sight-seeing spots on my AirB&B booking (it was a family trip that lasted till end Oct though I stayed on till mid-November).

How to get there:
Take the 210 freeway, then onto CA-18/N Waterman Ave, then Highway 138 towards Crestline. Pass a few junctions and when you reach a brown sign 'Camp Seely'& its barricaded carpark, follow left on a narrow single-lane dirt road, yes you can drive through this although we had doubts at first. At the end of this road you will see a small parking area straight ahead (maybe good for 5 cars) and a barricade that starts the trail.

The drive up the mountains are always nice. The general consensus is that there is nothing much going for San Bernardino, although the national forests and surrounding mountains are totally worth checking out.

This is the start of one of the trail heads that is just at the end of the parking lot, past the barricade. I came here on two separate occasions. At the end of the post I will show the other trail.

This is the easier trail if you'd like a stroll first, it is evenly paved, nicely shaded, sometimes the wind gets gusty and cold.

The other trail is towards the bottom of the hill (right).

After about a mile stroll, you will come to this sign that directs you downwards right.
This hike is about 1.7 to 2 miles round trip. There is a bit of a slope and slippery areas (because of all the fallen loose leaves) after this paved area to get to the rocks so you can bring a hiking stick or wear proper shoes if you are not used to it. If you have climacophobia or bathmophobia or vertigo, please bring those and tell the phobias to pipe down and not disrupt your fun activities (at least that's what I do).

This is the descending slope, after that you will see some useful graffiti to know you're on the right track. It is probably a bit steeper than it looks in the photos.

The Heart Rock is after this rock ledge. A couple was ahead of us, walking their cute puppy.

I gingerly climbed and peered over the edge of the cliff. Aw it's dried up! It did rain last week though but I guess there was just insufficient water.
Sweet. I plan to come back when there's a waterfall going.
Wanted to go down there, but don't know how high we were up here, but yep it may spell death if I slip.

Oh yes, there was an incident at this spot. I saw an animal foraging in the high forest on the opposite bank but thought it was the couple's huskie puppy, but something wasn't quite right in its gait. So I asked boyfriend to look again for me as I have pretty bad eyesight even with my glasses. He said 'Yeah? It's their dog.'. Then I thought it was strange they were comfortable letting the puppy roam in the wild without supervision. And then I looked again at the couple and saw they were holding the dog. Hey..... if that's the puppy down there, then what was that I just saw?! Turned out it was a bobcat. Both grey, and similar sized. Bobcat has bigger hind legs. Dammit... By the time we figured that out, we missed our chances to take pictures/ film it! I mean what if I'd just spotted Bigfoot lol. Trust my gut instinct the next time and snap first, ask later!

Ah well. We didn't want any trouble with wild animals so finished our food before climbing down.
It's nice. Granite I think? Unfortunately there are some graffiti and litter around.

Wondering how I was to climb back up later? Well the same way I climbed down sorta.

The creek was almost dry.
I do not recommend going in the water but I know some people do, um leeches, folks. The water's pretty stagnant at this point and the leaves are rotting. We've had experience with leeches in the stream near Waterman Canyon, which may be linked to this. Not fun. Traumatised for life lol.
After that it was getting late so we climbed back up where we came from. This is the nice view driving back to civilisation.

****

Okay I mentioned the other lower trail closer to the creek, from the parking lot you go down the slope, past the swimming pool at Camp Seely.
The view will look something like this after a short walk. It is a winding dirt path,  and rather uneven terrain. It goes uphill and downhill with some treading on small boulders and rocks. It is less windy. You can choose this way but I felt it was a bit more tiring.

We went further down the valley for this 2nd trip but came a bit too late in the afternoon so had to turn back shortly after.

Just to note I left one of my walking sticks (it was just a long branch I found in the stream) propped against a tree for whoever wants to use it. 14th or 15th November 2017, and you're most welcome lol.

Thanks for reading and see you in my next post.

FLOGGING THE DEAD EPSON HORSE

$

Epson I'm gone. I think I'm going back to Canon. I don't even remember why I switched from Canon years ago. I think it was because I wanted a laser printer, and ended up with a Samsung laser printer that turned out to be garbage. Then we got an Epson because Epson can churn out nice prints.

Admittedly I seldom used the printer so there were bound to be problems. It worked great at first, and then after some time the printhead became easily clogged despite running maintenance (which probably compounded the problem). However my first DIY cleaning was a success, I got the black to work perfectly for around 5 months. I happily inserted packing slips into my packages and printed government pdfs. The CMY colours didn't work though, as the cartridges were almost empty so I printed exclusively monochrome. Then I really wanted to print brown lines and thought to clean the other coloured nozzles. Big fat mistake. Now the black doesn't work at all. The printhead and nozzles are completely kaput for some reason. I wondered what I did different?

Anyhow gave it another try today after spending 4 hours of a failed attempt yesterday. By now I'm ready to throw in the towel but have spent good $$$ on new (yes GENUINE) cartridges and already fitted them in.

My rationale was concluding maybe yesterday's fiddling loosened the pesky dried ink overnight. Maybe I inadvertently introduced air pockets in the delicate mechanisms or something. Well, the printhead is squeaky clean now. I used a 27gauge needle and syringe to make sure the nozzles came out clear when flushed with Windex. 150 paper towels and tissues & 100 cotton bud q-tips later I am quite confident the printer will finally work.

Plugged it in. "CARTRIDGE NOT RECOGNISED - BLACK. REINSTALL CARTRIDGE".

What and why?! It was recognised just fine just now?!

Tried the alcohol on contact point trick, tried the eraser on chip trick, tried the 'relax and come back later' trick. Didn't work!! I'm done now.

8 hours of my life wasted and an added sense of frustration, thus this blogpost. I could've finished my illustrations. I could've primed my two canvas that's sitting in the corner collecting dust. I could've cleaned my room. I could've written a symphony. But nooooo, was flogging a dead heap of black plastic that is certainly self-aware. It doesn't want to be helped despite my sincere intentions. I gave it my best shot really. Maybe I was too rough with it? Well then, enjoy your time in the trash heap.

In fact I could've posted about my March Field Air Museum trip from last year which I have procrastinated for a while. I'm going to do it now and schedule it for the day after. So see you in my next post and apologies for reading my rant if you made it here ;)

MARCH FIELD AIR MUSEUM

$

We went to the March Field Air Museum located in Riverside California, along the I-215 freeway, you won't miss the rows & rows of planes! It is a fun place to check out even if you are not an aviation nerd. Lots of exhibits and history for a good price. And it's March now, so what better time to post this! We visited in Oct 2017.

https://www.marchfield.org/

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Free for children under 4 years old.

Our AirBnB lodging was just 15 mins from this place so we had to visit it. I'm not a plane or military enthusiast but all of us were pretty excited when we saw the planes from the carpark. There is hardly a chance for us to see these amounts of historical planes at such close range and so vast a space.

First we were greeted by this magnificent SR-71 Blackbird! You won't be able to tear your eyes off it. That is a gorgeous sleek design if I ever saw one.

We had fun taking photos with this heavy Japanese turret gun. I've seen that battleship movie Yamato.

Commercial airline uniforms from the past also included.

There is a NASA & Russian space exhibit room. Here are some flight simulators for the kids.

Also a large exhibit on the different wars. There are window display rows on both sides.

After the indoor exhibit in the hangar, we headed outdoors where almost all of the planes were displayed. And there were many!

It was hot, dry, windy and very sunny, typical Californian summer in the desert. We all got a little crispy.
I recall there were Russian MiGs, US Fighter Jets, Bombers. I only know the B-17 bomber. Below is a B-17G Flying Fortress.

Hiding under the wing for some shade! I forgot my hat and sunglasses and of all colours, chose to wear black. You are not allowed to touch the planes.

Next to the March Air Base so we got to see planes land nearby.

There were also Vietnam-era helicopters.

It may take a few hours to explore the entire place if you want to read the boards in detail, so it is a good idea to come earlier and allow some time to browse the gift shop. They stock nice pins, military patches and toys, of which I bought several pins.

That's it, there are just way too many photos so I added a chosen few. I give this place a big thumbs up, just remember to bring water, a hat and slap on sunscreen! Oh and your cameras of course!

SUMMER AND AUTUMN DIGITAL STAMPS

These include the rest of Lemon Shortbread Summer & some Autumn 2017 digital stamps.

Just realised I haven't blogged my new releases for a whole year since March 2017. The posts are mainly promoting my digis which is utterly boring since there's nothing to talk about really. Also ashamed for not taking the time to colour them!

Have also proved I am a terrible procrastinator lol.

At least my excuse was the printer wasn't working good. I've got a new one now if you have read my Epson rant below. Oh well no more excuses so cheers to more colored artworks. I can always opt for digital but it takes many hours (uninspired slow worker here) and I can't work long on the computer without my hands cramping up.

Here they are, just follow the links to the shop:

Electric Guitar Girl:
Not quite what I wanted I'll do better the next time. Maybe Debbie Harry, she is awesome.

Flower Wave:
More flowers. This time all over the place!

Flamingoes:
One of my favourite birds, I go to the bird park just to see them. It's either paint or draw and I haven't got time to paint.

Sailor Dress:
Something cute and summery for the kids. Did you notice I didn't draw eyelashes this time?

Painter Girl:
Something for the artists. No not me, I think it looks more like a friend. The apron is mine though, back when I was working at a bubble tea outlet (first job after school) lol... Dare to say I made the yummiest boba in town. The owner was the best boss ever.

T-shirt and Soda:
I saw this printed burger t-shirt at a store. It was hideous and cute at the same time. I like love junk food.

Blowing Bubbles:
Another one for the kids.

Ribbon Roses:
Pretty much the summary of my Shoujo-themed Pinterest boards.

Hugs of Love:
Early Valentine's, Anniversary's, Thinking of You, Mom's Day, XOXO.

Hat Bouquet:
This one also comes in a cropped version in case you don't want to use the whole figure. Shoo-in for the last summer stamps.

Wish Fairy:
Fairy godmother godsister, birthdays, well wishes, etc.

Windy Days
I was planning for our California family trip. Yes the Santa Ana Winds (aka Devil Winds). You won't be smiling when you experience them.

Hot Cuppa:
Enjoyed Gilmore Girls back in the noughties but didn't get to finish the show. Re-watched the whole series to catch up on that Netflix special. As much as I like Alexis Bledel, Rory Gilmore is the absolute worst. But that's not gonna ruin this cute piccie innit.
